The Federal Government has disclosed its reason for introducing an excise duty of N10/litre on all non-alcoholic, carbonated and sweetened beverages. Speaking during the public presentation of the 2022 budget on Wednesday in Abuja, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, said the decision was in the interest of Nigerians. The minister said the excise duty on soft drinks would discourage excessive consumption of sugary beverages which contributes to diabetes, obesity among others.

Reps To Appeal Judgement On Section 84 (12) Of Electoral Act, Petition NJC

The House of Representatives on Wednesday revealed plans to appeal the judgement of the Federal High Court sitting in Umuahia, asking the Attorney General of the Federation to delete section 84 (12) from the electoral act amendment bill recently signed into law. Naija News reports that President Muhammadu Buhari recently signed the bill into law after several calls from stakeholders who believe doing so ahead of the 2023 general election will help curb excesses by politicians before, during and after elections.

A former Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has said Nigerians should be made to pay house rents monthly. The former Governor of Lagos State also called for the review of tenancy laws in states to compel landlords to collect rents monthly.
